A great website is not the one with the most features. It is the one that has the right ones and does them well. These are the ten features we consider essential for any business website, and why each one matters.

1. A mobile-first layout

Designed for phones first, then adapted for larger screens. Readable text, buttons that are easy to tap, nothing running off the edge. Google mainly uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking [1].

2. Fast loading

Compressed images, light code and good hosting, so pages load in a couple of seconds even on mobile data. Speed affects both your visitors and your Google ranking. Google's Core Web Vitals recommend that the main content of a page appears within 2.5 seconds [2].

3. A clear call to action on every page

One obvious next step: call, message or send a form. On phones, a call button that is always visible. See what a small business website needs to bring in enquiries.

4. A simple contact form

Few fields, clear labels, a clear message when it has been sent, and enquiries that actually arrive in your inbox. Nielsen Norman Group's form research says every field you remove makes a form easier to complete [3].

5. A page for each service

Each main service with its own page, explanation, photos and prices or a starting point. It helps visitors find what they need and helps Google show the right page.

6. Reviews and case studies

Proof from real customers and real projects. Separate case study pages are one of the strongest trust signals you can add.

7. SEO basics built in

Unique titles and descriptions, clean headings, image descriptions, a sitemap, internal links and a connected Google Business Profile. Start with SEO for a business website: where to start.

8. Security and backups

A security certificate (the padlock), software kept up to date and regular backups, so a problem never means losing your site.

9. Accessibility

Good contrast, readable sizes, descriptions for images and a site that works with a keyboard. It helps people with disabilities and makes the site easier for everyone. The W3C points out that accessibility also helps older people, anyone on a small screen and anyone reading in bright sunlight [4].

10. Easy updates and real support

Prices, hours and offers change. You need an easy way to update them, or someone who does it for you quickly. And when something goes wrong, a real person to contact.

Get these ten right and your website will be fast, trusted, easy to find and easy to keep current.

Check your own site

Go through the list and tick what your website already has. Anything missing is a good place to start. You can also compare it with what a modern business website needs in 2026, or read the bigger picture in web design: a complete guide.

Every Studio V1 website includes all ten as standard, built and reviewed by real developers, for one monthly price. See how we build it, from the first call to launch.
