IN THIS ARTICLE · 10 PARTS
SEO, search engine optimisation, is everything that helps your website show up when people search on Google. It has a reputation for being complicated, and parts of it are. But for most small businesses, the first and most important steps are simple and can be done in a sensible order.
1. Find out what your customers search for
Before changing anything, write down how your customers would describe what they need. Not your internal terms, their words. "Boiler repair Varna", "wedding venue near Dobrich", "accountant for small business". Google's SEO Starter Guide [1] recommends starting from the words people would use to find your content.
Type a few of these into Google and look at the suggestions and at the "People also ask" box. These are the questions your website should answer.
For a simple method, see keyword research for small businesses, made simple.
2. Give each main topic its own page
One page about "our services" cannot rank for ten different services. Give each main service its own page, with its own title, a clear explanation, prices or a starting point, photos and a way to contact you. If you work in several towns, think about pages by city, done carefully.
3. Get the basics on every page right
These are not tricks, just the things Google needs to understand your pages:
- a unique title for every page, with the service and the place
- a short description that makes people want to click
- one clear main heading
- real text that answers the visitor's questions
- images with descriptive file names and alt text
How to write the first two: page titles and descriptions that get clicks.
4. Make it fast and mobile-friendly
Google looks at how your site works on a phone, and so do your visitors. Slow pages and layouts that break on small screens hurt both your ranking and your enquiries. If you are not sure how your site does, this is one of the first things we check, and one of the features every great website should have. Google mainly uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking [2].
5. Set up your Google Business Profile
For local businesses, the map results often matter more than the normal list. Claim your Google Business Profile, fill in every field, add photos, link it to your website and ask happy customers for reviews. It costs nothing and often brings results faster than anything else. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show up [3].
6. Link your pages together
Internal links, links from one page of your site to another, help visitors find more and help Google understand which pages are important. More in internal links: the easiest SEO win. Link services to related services, articles to the services they mention, and case studies to the work they show. Google's link guidelines also ask for descriptive link text [4].
7. Keep adding useful content
A blog is not required, but useful articles that answer real customer questions bring in visitors who are already interested. Write about the questions you hear on the phone every week. One good article a month is better than ten thin ones.
Good SEO for a small business is mostly doing the basics properly, page by page, and keeping the site alive.
What not to do
Avoid buying links, stuffing the same keyword into every sentence, or copying text from other websites. These either do nothing or get your site pushed down. Google's spam policies list keyword stuffing and link spam among the practices that can push a site down or out of the results [5].
Start with a solid site
Many of these steps are much easier when the website is built with them in mind. Every Studio V1 site comes with an SEO-ready setup: proper titles and descriptions, fast loading, a mobile-first layout and clean structure. See what is included, or read how much a website costs in 2026.
